The new Meredith College lacrosse squad is set to hit the field Saturday, October 20, to give fans of the Avenging Angels an opportunity to preview what’s to come this spring.
Head Coach Lauren Scott has worked diligently this summer to field the College’s first lacrosse team. The Avenging Angels open the regular season in February at Piedmont with the first home contest slated for a 2 p.m. launch on March 2 versus the Ferrum Panthers.
The USA South recognized women’s lacrosse as an official conference sport beginning in 2001 with just five member institutions fielding a team in what was then known as the Dixie Conference. In 2006 the conference enjoyed its first NCAA bid as the required seven schools participated during the season.
Meredith joins Agnes Scott, Christopher Newport, Ferrum, Greensboro, LaGrange, Methodist, N.C. Wesleyan and Piedmont during the 2013 conference season. The top six teams at the close of the regular season will compete in the USA South Championships in Rocky Mount in April.
Meredith invited the N.C. State club team and Mount Olive’s inaugural squad to campus Saturday for a chance to test out the turf and get the Avenging Angels ready for the official season beginning in just four short months.
Saturday’s Jamboree begins at 6 p.m. under the lights at the Meredith Athletic Field.
