The Wall at Merritt’s Store and Grill

You may have recently seen Meredith’s own Robin Britt, ‘73, featured on WRAL’s Tarheel Traveler along with her business, Merritt’s Store and Grill, a ‘5 star hole in the wall’ that is known for their locally famous BLTs. Built in 1929, the building that now holds Merritt’s Store and Grill was originally a service station. However, in the 1970s, the Merritt family sold their spot and it was then turned into a convenience store with a small grill. The Britt family eventually purchased Merritt’s in 1991. Three years ago during the beginning of the recession the Britt family decided that they needed to do something to reinvent their business. They removed out the convenience store element and began focusing on their food by adding inside as well as outside seating for their patrons, many of whom have been coming for over 50 years. Today, Merritt’s Store and Grill reflects Britt’s family as an intersection of their family that serves as a place of belonging for all people in Chapel Hill.

Robin recently announced Merritt’s Art Wall debut, also known as “The Wall” on Saturday September 15th featuring Diane Cashion Photography. Diane Cashion, a Chapel Hill resident, has been taking photos of Merritt’s Store and Grill for quite some time by capturing the everyday life at Merritt.

Tonight at 7 pm, Merritt’s will be hosting a concert featuring a blue grass band from Asheville, NC, called Town Mountain. Dinner is at 6pm and the show starts at 7pm.  Tickets are $10.  Tomorrow night come by between 5 and 7pm for an open house ‘meet, eat & greet’ for local artist Diane Cashion Photography. The inaugural exhibit on “The Wall”, Moments at Merritt’s, is a collection of fine photographic images of the local landmark.  Stop on by for a world famous BLT, drinks, great music and great company. All are welcome!
