Yes, our greatness as a nation has depended on individual initiative, on a belief in the free market. But it has also depended on our sense of mutual regard for each other, of mutual responsibility. The idea that everybody has a stake in the country, that we’re all in it together and everybody’s got a shot at opportunity. Americans know this. We know that government can’t solve all our problems – and we don’t want it to. But we also know that there are some things we can’t do on our own. We know that there are some things we do better together.

Recently, I read the above quote, and it made me think about the greater Meredith community, which to me, seems like a big continuum of education, community spirit and sharing among faculty, staff, the alumnae and the student body. A feeling of constant regeneration of new ideas and old traditions; the passing on of wisdom from the old while we learn from the new.
Meredith graduates are, as a whole, quite wise when it comes to our school and ourselves. We know a good prospective student when we meet her, a giving alumna when we need her (which is a lot) and a caring and devoted faculty member who can answer the call, whatever it may be. We know this because of the community of sharing we’re a part of and a mutual belief that we all have a responsibility to give back to the College, be it a financial gift or time volunteered.
Meredith Alumnae recently sponsored the Discover Meredith prospective student recruiting event. I was overwhelmed at the alumnae response of finding and hosting prospective students at a Saturday event on campus. Alumnae who brought students to campus were proud to show off our heritage and pass along to the next generation the experiences we had while we were in school; the experiences passed along once again…
